This image embodies the inescapable decline and overwhelming mystery that permeate Mussard’s story. For this project, I reinterpreted the cover of Patrick Süskind’s Le Testament de Maître Mussard with the intention of capturing the tormented and enigmatic essence of this 18th-century work. The story follows Jean-Jacques Mussard, a Genevan goldsmith who, after amassing a fortune, retires to Passy, where the discovery of a shell rock in his garden leads him on an obsessive investigation. This quest leads him to believe that the earth is becoming “shelly,” under the influence of a malevolent deity he calls the Great Shell, destined to crush the world. My illustration aims to reflect this descent into paranoia and terror, symbolizing both the inexorable degradation and the heavy atmosphere of mystery that envelops Mussard’s fate.
